Antoine Legrand

Antoine Legrand ( * 1629 in Douai, then Spanish Netherlands; † August 7, 1699 in London, also Antoine Le Grand or Anthony le Grand) was a Dutch Catholic monk and missionary and author of philosophical and theological works.

Biography

In 1649 joined Legrand called Recollects, a reform branch of the Franciscan Order, who had the mission and recatholicization prescribed. He was educated at Saint Bonaventure Convention in Douai, where he was appointed in 1655 as professor of philosophy. Legrand appeared in Douai beyond the Collège anglais, an educational institution for Catholic religious refugees from England. This activity meant that he was sent in 1656 to the mission to England. His task was not without danger, but Catholic priests were persecuted and sometimes even executed in England after the separation of the Anglican Church. In England, he assumed responsibilities within the Order, but was also works as a philosophy and theology teacher, a chaplain, as a private tutor in long-established Catholic. Working families and as a philosophical and theological writer. Mainly worked Legrand in London and Oxfordshire. 1698 Legrand is elected Provincial Superior of the Franciscan Order in England. Legrand died in 1699 shortly after returning from a trip to his home due to stroke.
