Antoine Petit

Antoine Petit ( born July 23 in 1722 in Orléans, † October 21, 1794 in Olivet ) was a French physician.

Life and work

After his schooling he went to be trained for surgeons to Paris. After his studies, he was soon teaching in anatomy, surgery and obstetrics. In 1746 he was appointed docteur régent.

His ability in the diagnosis of diseases caused him to become a well-known doctor, whose advice was valued outside of France. The childless Petit put a part of his extensive assets, an establishing of institutions. He helped establish the Faculty of Medicine of Paris and the establishment of a Chair of Anatomy and Surgery. A foundation in his hometown of Orléans, he made a donation of more than 100,000 livres. The purpose of this foundation should be by the appointment of four doctors and two surgeons in the free care of needy patients in the city.

From 1769 to 1775 he worked as a professor of anatomy at the Jardin du Roi. The town of Fontenay -aux -Roses Petit donated for the accommodation of the public health officer of the city a house. For the Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot wrote an article about the anatomy of the human body. One of his students at the Jardin du Roi was Félix Vicq d' Azyr.

On June 28, 1760 he was elected to the Académie des Sciences to succeed Jacques -René Tenon ( 1724-1816 ) to their member as " Adjoint anatomiste ". On August 31, 1773 moved for Tenon as " Associé anatomiste " after and was on September 2, 1784 " Pensionnaire vétéran ". After the reorganization of the Academy Petit was confirmed as " Pensionnaire vétéran " on April 23 in 1785.
