Antoing is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut in Wallonia on the border with France.

Geography

The community lies on the Scheldt, about eight kilometers southeast of Tournai and Lille on the railway line - Liege.

It includes the towns of Antoing (I.), Fontenoy ( II ), Maubray ( III.), Péronnes -les- Antoing ( IV ), Bruyelle (V.) and Calonne (VI ).

History

During the War of the Austrian Succession Fontenoy was the scene of the battle of Fontenoy on May 11, 1745.

Attractions

  • The Castle of Antoing, which belongs to the Prince of Ligne since the mid 17th century, was first mentioned in the 12th century, but essentially expanded from 13 to 15 century. Today's neo-Gothic shape was completed in the 19th century by the architect Eugène Viollet -le- Duc.
  • The town hall was built in 1565 as a cloth hall.
