Anton Altmann

Anton Altmann ( born June 4, 1808 in Vienna, † July 9, 1871 in Vienna ) was an Austrian landscape painter.

Life

Anton Altmann was (* 1777 Datschitz, † February 26, 1818 ), the son of the painter of the same name born. His ancestors were painters, the grandfather Joseph had already painted paintings for churches. The family came originally from Tyrol, but emigrated to Moravia. At the age of ten years Altmann had lost both parents. His brother, who was a minister to Trebitsch, took care of the further education of the boys. Through him Altmann was able to attend the Latin school in Brno. After the request of his brother he should study and later also clergyman; Altmann but was not interested in this career, but much more for nature. That's why he painted at an early age, initially more playful. He decided to study the art, not the theology. After he had completed his education, he attended for two years the Academy at Vienna, where he was trained in the art. During this time he was funded for two years, but had to earn his own living later. This was not easy for him, but he found a job in 1829 as an art teacher of the Hungarian Count Joseph Apponyis.

For a year he taught the count, then he returned to his home and began to deal with the oil painting, after he had previously devoted only to the drawing. He taught self-taught in oil painting, his favorite, he studied at Vienna in galleries or in the great outdoors. But He was slow, as he was repeatedly forced to earn his living elsewhere. Therefore he could until 1838 to complete his first oil painting. Already in the following year he painted another painting, which was bought by Franz Karl of Austria. This encouraged the painter, so he further devoted himself to painting. As of 1844, he painted large landscapes, his paintings were praised by fellow painters and connoisseurs. He also painted watercolors, so in his last years. Many of his paintings were bought by make and noble persons and also of royal courts of other countries and shown in exhibitions. In addition, the Kunstverein in Austria bought some of his works and they raffled off among members.

Altmann died in 1871.
