Anton Dereser

Thaddeus Anton Dereser ( born February 3, 1757 in Frankfurt am Main, † June 16, 1827 in Breslau) was a German Catholic theologian. He was professor of Gräzistik, hermeneutics, exegesis, pastoral theology and dogmatics.

Life

Dereser joined the Carmelite Order in 1776 and studied philosophy and theology at the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg and the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg. He was ordained a priest in Mainz in 1780. From 1783 he was professor of Greek and New Testament hermeneutics at the Academy ( 1786 University ) Bonn. In 1791, professor of exegetical theology Dereser in Strasbourg was. During the French Revolution he refused the oath to the constitution and was therefore condemned to death; but after the fall of Robespierre, he was released again.

In 1799 he became professor of oriental languages ​​, exegesis and pastoral theology in Heidelberg, 1807 then professor of biblical exegesis and oriental languages ​​at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg and 1810 pastor in Karlsruhe. From 1811 to 1814 he was rector of the Episcopal Seminary in Lucerne. In 1815 he became professor of dogmatic theology and canon of the new Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in Breslau. Dereser was a Catholic representative of the Enlightenment, and put the Bible from rationalistic. He translated the Old Testament from Hebrew and thus completed the work of Dominic von Brentano, who had translated the New Testament and the Pentateuch. The Bible translation of Brentano and Dereser appeared in a revised 1828-37 by Johann Martin Augustin Scholz version.
