Anton Dominik Fernkorn

Anton Dominik Ritter Fernkorn ( born March 17, 1813 in Erfurt, † November 16, 1878 in Vienna ) was a German -Austrian sculptor and caster. He is considered one of the most important masterpieces of early historicism.

Life

After a partially self-paced training Fernkorn studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Johann Baptist Stiglmaier and Ludwig Schwanthalerstraße. From about 1850 he was in Vienna, where he used an old cannon foundry (now Electrotechnical Institute building of the Vienna University of Technology in 1873 so named Gußhausstraße ) as a place of work ( art foundry ) and worked with Johann Preleuthner. Also to Hanns Gasser developed an artistic relationship that is evident in the relationship of numerous subjects.

His most famous works are patriotic stills in Austria, especially the equestrian statues of Archduke Charles (1853-1859) and Prince Eugen (1860-1865) on Heldenplatz. He also created the Lion of Aspern was created, a reclining lion as war memorial and remembrance of the victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern. This sculpture is also on Heroes' Square - but the one in Aspern ( today part of Vienna Danube city).

The monument of Archduke Charles, after a painting by Johann Peter Krafft is, so far as a technical marvel, as the horse is only on its hind legs. This feat could not be repeated on Prince Eugene: here the tail of the horse touches the base.

After several strokes Fernkorn in 1868 admitted to a mental hospital, so the equestrian statue of Prince Eugene was completed by his students. According to legend, came long grain therefore illness that he could not repeat the technical performance of the Archduke Karl Monument. His student Franz Pönninger continued the fine art foundry workshop.

In Zagreb is the equestrian monument in honor of the Croatian Ban Josip Jelacic, which was also created by Fernkorn. It was completed in 1864 and inaugurated on December 17, 1866.

His grave is located in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 18). In 1880 ( 10th district ) was named Fernkorngasse after him in Vienna favorites.
