Anton Handlirsch

Anton Peter Josef Handl deer (born 20 January 1865 in Vienna, † August 28, 1935 ) was an Austrian entomologist and paleontologist. His fundamental work on fossil insects make him a pioneer of Palaeoentomology.

Life

He was the son of Rosina (* 1841) and Peter Handl Deer ( 1831-1873 ). His father was employed as a chef at Prince Schwarzenberg. Anton Handl deer visited the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna, and then began to wish his father a degree in pharmacy at the University of Vienna, from which he graduated with the degree of Master of Arts. Inspired by his older brother, the forensic pathologist and entomologist Adam deer Handl (1864-1890), and by Friedrich Moritz Brauer, he turned to the study of insects. Handl deer worked from 1886 as a research assistant at the Natural History Court Museum in Vienna and participated in setting up the new museum building opened in 1889 with. He remained until his retirement at the Museum, 1892 Assistant 1899 - Adjunct Curator, Curator in 1906, Second Class, First Class, 1918 curator and retired in 1922 as director. He now concentrated on his work as President of the Zoological and Botanical Society in Vienna. 1923 awarded him an honorary doctorate by the University of Graz. In 1924 he habilitated at the University of Vienna, in 1931 he was appointed extraordinary professor. From a stroke in 1928, he never recovered completely. He died in 1935 and was buried in the cemetery Dornbacher (Group 11, Number 10) in Vienna.

Handl deer had been married since 1892 with Martha Allounek ( 1869-1955 ). The couple had a son and a daughter.

Performance

Handl deer has left a very extensive body of work. In the early years he was primarily involved with the grave wasps ( Spheciformes ) and other Hymenoptera ( Hymenoptera). Even his first work " monograph related with Nysson and Bembex grave wasps " is, more than one thousand pages takes up all 1887-1895 published parts, strong. Honors

Handl deer was honored for his work in many cases. In 1921 he was appointed councilor. He was correspondent since 1914, real since 1922 member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. He was an honorary member of the Zoological-Botanical Society in Vienna and the German, Swiss, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, Russian and American entomological societies, also an honorary member of the Entomological Congresses. He was winner of the Franz -Joseph- Order ( 1911) and other high honors.

His grave is one of the dedicated to the City of Vienna honorary. In the district of Vienna Hernals Handl deer alley is named after him since 18 January 1966.
