Anton Martin Slomšek

Anton Martin Slomšek (* November 26, 1800 in Ponikva at Cilli, † September 24, 1862 in Maribor ) was the first bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Lavant Marburg. For the Slovenian national movement, he has been a promoter of public education as well as a writer and poet of great importance.

Slomšek studied theology and philosophy and was ordained a priest in 1824. After that, he worked for more than a decade Spiritual in seminary in Klagenfurt. In 1838 he became pastor in Mayrhofen balances on the Drava. In 1842 he was appointed to the Cathedral Chapter and appointed in the Lavant Valley to the diocesan school overseer in St. Andrew. In 1846 he was pastor of Celje and in the same year the Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Lavant, whose seat was moved in 1859 to Marburg an der Drau.

In 1999 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
