Anton Mauve

Anton Mauve ( born September 18, 1838 in Zaandam, † February 5, 1888 in Arnhem) was a leading Dutch landscape painters of the late 19th century.

At the age of 16 he went with the animal painter Pieter Frederik van Os ( 1808-92 ) in teaching. There were animals (especially sheep, but also cows and horses) Mauve favorite subject. Then he stayed for some months at Wouterus Verschuur. At this time he developed a love for horses. He was also encouraged by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel.

With his penchant for very simple designs that are decorated with gray and fine blond silver tones, he was an excellent watercolorist at the circle of artists of the Hague School. Width melancholy heaths with grazing sheep, horses and cows dominate his work.

Many of his commissioned works are now in the U.S., but also in the Netherlands, for example in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Vincent van Gogh, the cousin of his wife, Mauve led approach to painting. In October 1881 he sent him his first paint box for oil paints ( the van Gogh in Mauve absence apparently not even dare to touch ). The end of November, he taught for three weeks him in his Hague studio in watercolors, which then salable works promised to the genius but not particularly lay (outside Mauve studio created van Gogh no Watercolor in the then -counter style, and generally are only a few known ). Van Gogh returned just before Christmas with some watercolors and oil studies to Etten back, which he described as an initial (164, December 24, 1881). Also worth mentioning is that Mauve brought his protege Johan Hendrik Weiss break in contact, probably to protect itself by a second professional opinion. White breaking judgment on Van Gogh's pen and ink drawings encouraged this in 1882 to the works that make up the first climax in his oeuvre.

"And if mauve is here, then I 'll go where Mauve goes. " Van Gogh had his admiration on October 15, 1881 compared to his other mentor, Anthon van Rappard expressed, (R2). In early 1882, however, the paths of the two began to separate - not least because Mauve suffered from depressive episodes ( " they stand to each other in this respect in every way ," van Gogh wrote this). Mauve initially wanted to work for two months again on its own, but took the contacts are not back up, because van Gogh now with the opportunity prostitutes Clasien Hoornik ( " Sien " ) lived together.

" Souvenir de Mauve ' (flowering peach trees, in memory of Mauve ), end in March 1888, shortly after mauves death, is Van Gogh's final tribute to his in-laws cousin.
