Anton Pelinka

Anton Pelinka ( born October 14, 1941 in Vienna) is since September 2006 Professor of political science and nationalism studies in the English-speaking Central European University in Budapest. Previously, he was since 1975 a professor of political science at the University of Innsbruck, including several years as dean ( last 2004-2006 Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology ).

Life

After studying law at the University of Vienna (PhD 1964) and then of political science at the Institute for Advanced Studies and Scientific Research, he worked as an editor for the weekly newspaper " The Furrow ". For his first scientific work, a Research Associate position, he returned to the Institute of Higher Studies and Scientific Research, whose director at the time was the Austrian- American historian and political scientist Ernst Florian Winter. In 1971, he went to Salzburg. There he completed his habilitation in a year later. He went to Germany for two years, teaching in Essen and Berlin. In 1975 he got a solid professorship position at the University of Innsbruck. In the coming years, however, several visiting professorships followed abroad, 1977 at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, as well as three stays in the United States: 1981 to the University of New Orleans, 1997 at Stanford University, and from 2001 to 2002 the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, following addition at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. For research purposes, also he held from 1990 to 1991 at Harvard University and in 1994 at the Collegium Budapest.

Effective October 1, 2004 Professor Pelinka was appointed Dean of the Faculty of newly established on 1 January 2005 for Political Science and Sociology at the University of Innsbruck. He held until his move to the Central European University in Budapest this position.

Anton Pelinka is chairman of the Society for Political Enlightenment and regular commentator on Austrian television ORF. Besides his work as a scientist, he represented Austria in the 1990s in a Commission on racism and xenophobia of the EU.

After Pelinka Jörg Haider accused in 1999 on Italian television to trivialize the Nazis, he was sued by Haider. The dispute Pelinka was acquitted in the last instance by a judgment of the Higher Regional Court of Vienna on 21 March 2001 on charges of slander.

Pelinka is a brother of journalist Peter Pelinka and Uncle Niko Pelinka.
