Anton Rehmann

Anton Rehmann (Polish Antoni Rehman ) ( born May 13, 1840 in Krakow, † January 13, 1917 in Lviv ) was a Polish or old Austrian geographer, geomorphologist, botanist and explorer. He published mostly in German in Austrian magazines and is considered an Austrian botanist, since Galicia then part of Austria - Hungary. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Rehm. ".

Life

Anton was the son of master chimney sweeps Józef Rehman (1812-1882) and Anna Piotrowski. He studied from 1860 to 1863 Natural Sciences and Geography at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he in 1864 received his doctorate of philosophy in the Department of Botany. In 1865 he explored the steppes of Podolia, the banks of the Dniester and the Chornohora. In the years 1866-1867 he specialized in plant anatomy in Munich at Carl Wilhelm von Naegeli. In 1868, he traveled through Southern Russia and in 1869 he completed his habilitation at the University of Krakow in the Department of Plant Anatomy.

In 1873 and 1874 he traveled to the Caucasus and the Crimea, from 1875 to 1877 and from 1879 to 1880 he traveled through South Africa, where he attended, among others, the areas of the San, the Khoikhoi, Zulu and Bantu peoples.

In 1882 he became professor of Lviv University. 1884-1897 was the botanist and lecturer at the Veterinary Academy.

In 1887 professor of the Lviv University, he held in the academic year 1887/1888, the function of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and 1888/1889 the Rector of the university. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences Krakow, the physiographic Commission of the Academy of Krakow scholarship and the Natural Science Nicolaus Copernicus company whose Präses he was 1888/89. In 1910 he retired.

During his work and his travels, he collected enormous amounts herbaristisches material. To date, there is his collection in herbaria around the world, including the most important in Krakow and Lviv.

He described several new plant taxa, among others, a variation of the herb wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L. var calcigena Rehm. ), which is now recognized as endemic of the Pieniny mountain country and therefore is red list of threatened plants in Poland. Is assigned Rehmann also the Simple bur reed ( Sparganium emersum ).
