Antoni Piechniczek

Krzysztof Antoni Piechniczek ( May 3, 1942 in Chorzów ) is a retired Polish football player and coach.

Life

During his time in Piechniczek was a defensive midfielder and right-back. He played from 1961 to 1965 at Legia Warsaw and then from 1965 to 1972 in his home club Ruch Chorzów. In the season 1972/1973 he played one year in French Chateauroux, before he ended his active career. The greatest success of the triple Polish national player was winning the Polish championship in 1968 with Ruch Chorzów.

A graduate of the Warsaw School of Sport then began to work as a coach. His club stations were: BKS Bielsko- Biała, Odra Opole, Ruch Chorzów, Gornik Zabrze. Abroad, he worked at clubs in Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Tunisia. His greatest success as a club coach were winning the League Cup in 1977 with Polish Odra Opole and the Polish Championship in 1987 with Gornik Zabrze.

In December 1980 he was appointed to the National coach of the Polish national football team. He started on 5 January 1981, reached in the first year to qualify for the World Cup 1982 in Spain. This tournament was the last great triumph of a Polish team will be at a World Cup tournament. Following a rather weaker games in the preliminary round against Cameroon, Italy and Peru the team succeeded in the second final round after a win over Belgium and a draw against the Soviet Union the semi-finals. However, Italy was too strong, but after the 0-2 defeat against eventual champions a 3-2 victory against France succeeded in the match for third place. As with the Football World Cup 1974 in Germany Poland won the bronze medal.

For the European Football Championship 1984 in France Piechniczek could not qualify with his team, yet he remained coach and qualified again for the Football World Cup 1986 in Mexico. The team, however, had already peaked. The preliminary round they stood still and threw Portugal out of the tournament, but Brazil in the second round was too strong. Then Piechniczek resigned from his post. In May 1996, he then returned again in this office back to lead Poland to the Football World Cup 1998 in France. However, this failed and he resigned on June 7, 1997 again back from the office. Abroad Piechniczek also worked as coach of Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. With Tunisia, he took part in Seoul at the Olympic Games in 1988.
