Antonín Novotný (chess composer)

Antonin Nowotny ( Czech Antonín Novotný, born August 22, 1827 in Dobromilice; † March 9, 1871 ) was a Czech writer of chess compositions and lawyer in Brno / Brünn.

In January 1854, the Leipzig Illustrirte newspaper published a chess problem on an issue that made his name immortal: the Nowotny - adjustment, in short: the Nowotny. The core of this idea is the adjustment of a slant and a straight black line coverage in the intersection by a white sacrificial stone, creating a double threat is established. By hitting it can only be differentiated.

The root problem:

Solution:

1 Tf5! threatens second Tf4 matt.

1 ... 2 Rf8 Lf6! The crucial train, at the same time the lines f8 f4 and g7 e5 locks, matt with double threat Tf4 3 and 3 Te5. 2 ... 3 TXF6 Te5 matt, 2 ... 3 Lxf6 matt Tf4. The both threats parierende Total Parade 2 ... Lxf5 can ( dualistic ) be answered with matt 3 Sg5 or 3 Nd2.

Further, not nowotny - typical variants: 1 .. 2 Lxf5 Sf7! and the double threat 3.Sd6, 3.Sg5 is no longer parry. Or 1 .. Se6 or Sd5 2.Sd2 Kd4 3.Td5 matt; 1 .. Lxh6, LE5 2.Te5 matt.

It does not work: 1.Sf7? Sxb5 because now the escape field f5 is free! . In variant 1 .. Lxf5 is therefore a block of Use: The Lf5 blocked his king the only escape field, which is why the white knight can leave this field for a train out of sight.

Nowotny died in 1871 of tuberculosis. In the German chess magazine in 1871 his age 41 years was incorrectly specified and mentioned in various sources with the March 7, 1871 an incorrect date of death. The actual data determined in January Kalendovsky in the birth register.
