Antonio Arregui Yarza

Antonio Arregui Yarza ( born June 3, 1939 in Oñate in Burgos, Spain) is Archbishop of Guayaquil.

Life

Antonio Arregui Yarza In 1957 he entered the Opus Dei at and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Studium Generale of Opus Dei in Spain. He was then a doctorate in law at the Opus Dei -run by the University of Navarra ( completion 1964) and in canon law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ( Angelicum ). He received the sacrament of ordination to the priesthood on March 13, 1964 Opus Dei. He then worked in pastoral care in Ecuador and built the local Opus Dei on. In 1986, he received the Ecuadorian nationality.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Auzegera 1990 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Quito. He received his episcopal consecration on 22 February 1990, the then Archbishop of Quito, and later Cardinal Antonio González Zumárraga; Co-consecrators were Juan Ignacio Larrea Holguín, the then Archbishop of Guayaquil in Ecuador and military bishop, José Mario Ruiz Navas, former Bishop of Porto Viejo (Porto Vecchio).

1995 he was appointed Bishop of Ibarra. Between 2001 and 2002 he also served as Apostolic Administrator of Tulcán. On 7 May 2003, the appointment would come to the Archbishop of Guayaquil.

Between 1993 and 1999, the Secretary General of the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference was in 1999 and was elected Vice - President. For the period 2008 to 2011, he is President of the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference.

For his critical comments on the proposed new constitution in Ecuador in 2008, he received death threats.
