António Augusto de Rocha Peixoto

António Augusto César Peixoto Octaviano da Rocha ( born May 18, 1866 in Póvoa de Varzim; † May 2, 1909 in Matosinhos ) was a Portuguese archaeologist and ethnographer.

Career

He was secretary of the 1891 -founded by his compatriot Eca de Queirós magazine Revista de Portugal and wrote for other periodicals later.

At the Academia Politécnica do Porto (now the University of Porto ), he established a mineralogical, geological and paleontological Cabinet. In Porto he was also head of the public library and the Museu Municipal do Porto. Not far from his home town, he directed the excavations in Cividade de Terroso.

After his death Rocha Peixoto was initially buried in the town cemetery Cemitério de Agramonte in Porto. Two weeks later the body was reburied to Póvoa de Varzim.

Honors

1966 was named after him, the Biblioteca Municipal in Póvoa de Varzim.
