António Chainho

António Dâmaso Chainho ( born January 27, 1938 in São Francisco da Serra, a municipality in the district of Santiago do Cacém ) is a Portuguese composer and is considered a master of the Portuguese guitar.

Life

Initial phase

As a child he listened to Fado, the radio of his father, who played in the leisure Portuguese guitar cafes. 1960 Chainho was drafted for military service. In frame he was a time in Lisbon, where he publicly played the Portuguese guitar for the first time in bars. He was then reassigned from 1961 to 1963 in the Portuguese colonies.

He was stationed in Beira ( Mozambique), where he appeared on the radio and did a concert tour by the Overseas Province of Mozambique for the military forces. On his return he moved to Lisbon in 1965 and was a guitarist in various fado bars, about A Severa, A Toca or the O Faia by Lucília do Carmo. He accompanied some of the most important Fadistas his time, both live and in recordings, including Alfredo Marceneiro, Hermínia Silva, Carlos do Carmo or whose mother Lucília do Carmo.

His first record, he published in 1966, an EP titled Guitarradas. In the next 25 years he accompanied together with guitarist José Maria Nóbrega the singer Carlos do Carmo on his tours through Europe, Brazil, Japan and the United States.

Second phase

After the Carnation Revolution he accompanied in the 1970s and 1980s, musicians outside of Fado, about Tonicha, José José Mário Branco or Cid. Since the 1980s, he is not playing regularly in fado bars. In addition to the concert accompaniment for Carlos do Carmo and free Hermano da Câmara he worked at the time, among others, José Afonso. Important was his work with Rão Kyao in 3 of his albums ( Fado Bailado 1983, Estrada da Luz in 1984 and Danças de Rua 1987). Here he came up with music from other styles and cultures in contact, the newly inspired him in his future work.

In 1974 he opened in Cascais O Fado restaurant Picadeiro, along with two other Fadistas. In 1977 he recorded his album António Chainho: Guitarra Portuguesa on. He also produced occasional shots of Fadosängern, as of Mísia (1991 ) or Camané (1982).

Third phase

The 1990s were characterized by Chainho for his solo career and his work as a composer. He published a number of solo albums. Mention should be made here in particular A Guitarra e Outras Mulheres (English: " The guitar and other women "). 1998 Through his work on the project Red Hot Lisbon ( 1998) he met Andrés Levin know that the album in the same year produced it. It appeared in a period of resurgent interest in Fado and sold 20,000 times ( platinum status in Portugal). Various guest vocalists sing his compositions here, next to young names like Ana Sofia Varela or Marta Dias are Teresa Salgueiro including by the group Madredeus and Nina Miranda of the British trip - hop group Smoke City.

In 2000 he turned to the music of Brazil and recorded the album Rio Lisboa. As a result, he is invited by Adriana Calcanhotto for their Portugal tour, and Maria Bethânia asks him for concerts in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to himself. In 2010 he joined in his project LisGoa sounds of Portugal and India. For the future, he promises his first conventional fado album, so an album of fado songs, composed by him and traditionally performed by Fadosängern, accompanied only by his Portuguese guitar and a classical guitarist.

Reception

He is now one of the world's most cited guitarist and composer for the Portuguese guitar and is often dubbed "the master of the Portuguese guitar ".

He never seems a nostalgic, but to always have a contemporary relationship to music. In the 60s, he accompanied renowned Fadistas in the Fadolokalen as Lucília do Carmo or Maria Teresa de Noronha. He has also arranged in the 60s Hey Jew by the Beatles for the Fadista Carlos Bastos Fado and Rão Kyao in the 80s accompanied, as these " sang Fado" with his saxophone. In more recent times he has played with such diverse singers as Tereza Salgueiro or kd long. He has recorded with both the eccentric electro - tribal - rock band Blasted Mechanism and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He is known for his experimentation, most recently at the LisGoa project, where in the spirit of Goa meet Indian, and Portuguese sounds and musicians.
