Career

Early years

Antonio Chimenti was trained in the youth academy of SS Sambenedettese Calcio and was awarded in 1988 at the age of eighteen years at the former member of the Series B his first professional contract. But on his competitive debut had to wait until Chimenti in the season 1990/91. Sambenedettese was now relegated to the fourth-rate Serie C2 and the keeper could here make its first five games. In summer 1991 Chimenti followed re - promoted Sambenedettese not in the Serie C1 and was instead loaned to the C2 club SEF Tempio. There he was able to establish itself as a goalkeeper and played 35 of 38 league games. For the season 1992/93 Chimenti was again awarded by Sambenedettese, this time to Serie B for AC Monza Brianza, but where he held only the role of the substitute Keepers and only completed four league games.

The return to Sambenedettese in summer 1993 was for Chimenti then only of short duration. In October, he moved on a permanent basis to C1 - league opponent Salernitana Calcio. As the number one goalkeeper was instrumental in the rise in the B series, which was secured in the play- offs against SS Juve Stabia, and suffered in 27 inserts only 20 goals. In the following game years Chimenti established with his club in the second highest Italian league: Salernitana missed twice in a row in fifth just under the promotion to Serie A and the keeper conceded just 39 and 29 goals conceded. In the 1996/97 season but the club from Salerno fought against relegation in the second division, he could ultimately be realized in fifteenth of the final standings with three points ahead of the first relegation. In his three years in Serie B Salernitana Chimenti played 110 of 114 possible league games.

Change in the Serie A

His good performances during the summer of 1997 to the fact that he accept a put forward by Roma manager Franco Sensi contract offer and could change in the capital for the transfer fee of three billion lire. After his stops in the series C1, C2 and B Antonio Chimenti had arrived at the age of 27 years in the top flight of his home country.

There he was, however, initially planned only as a goalkeeper number two behind the Austrian Michael Konsel. First mandatory match practice received Chimenti early September when a 5-3 victory in the second round the first leg of the Coppa Italia on Hellas Verona. On the third league matchday in a 3-1 home win over Lecce Konsel was sent off in the 38th minute after a emergency brake of the field, and so substitute for field players Vagner Chimenti came to his Serie A debut. Coinciding with his first action he parried the due penalty of Riccardo Maspero and was so essential mitbeteiligt the victory of the Romans. Because Konsels subsequent lock Chimenti graduated a week later at FC Bologna ( 0-0) his first game over the entire ninety minutes before he moved back into second place. On 25 game against AS Bari ( 2-1 ) flew Konsel again just before half- time from space, again, he was suspended for one match and replaced by Chimenti. This was followed by 28 on matchday another ten minutes use of the Italian because of an injury Konsels shortly before the game ends before Chimenti still received three parole opportunities over the full season in the last three league games by coach Zdenek Zeman. In his first season at Roma he held in five of his nine inserts clean his goal.

In the summer of 1998 Chimenti preparation could then apply the goalkeeper duel with Konsel in his favor and went number one in the new season. Since the Roma had qualified as previous Fourth for the UEFA Cup, the Italians also announced on 15 September in Erstrundenhinspiel at Silkeborg IF ( 2-0) his European Cup debut and also denied all seven other parts of the Romans in this competition, five of them without goal until finally the resignation took place in the quarter- final against Atlético Madrid. In Serie A, Chimenti always standing on the field before the winter break; but in the second half, he missed a few games, and from the 26th lap he had finally behind Konsel again back on the bench. Only once he came after that for the capital city for use when his rival drew upon an injury during the match day 30 and had to be replaced. In the summer, the club undertook with Francesco Antonioli a new goalkeeper, Chimentis services were no longer required.

Three seasons in Lecce

Then moved to the Keeper Series A newly promoted Lecce, where he was able to establish itself in the door instantly as undisputed number one. Also thanks Chimentis services, the nine played at zero and only missed one league game due to a red card, Lecce 1999/2000 managed already clinched the league as 13 of the final standings. In the following season, but the club had to fear until the last game before again could be averted with a 2-1 victory over Lazio Rome the descent - but only thanks to goal difference compared to the same number of points Hellas Verona and Reggina Calcio on the first relegation zone. Chimenti stood in all league games over the full distance on the field. With his good performances he has made a significant contribution to the renewed relegation.

But even then Chimenti could not avoid relegation to Serie B next year, which had already been decided at an early stage. Whole twelve points were missing Lecce finally to the saving bank. Although the goalkeeper indebted with a late own goal on Matchday 2:3 defeat against AC Perugia, but was still the undisputed number one in the southern Italians. Only in the last three games, as the descent had already been decided, was allowed to play matches in his place nor his younger team-mate Giorgio Frezzolini.

Replacement keeper at Juventus

Chimenti extended his contract expiring at Lecce in the summer of 2002 and was not instead of the top club Juventus committed. There should be the now 32 -year-old behind Gianluigi Buffon take the place as a substitute goalkeeper, which had become vacant by the retirement of Michelangelo Rampulla. In November Chimenti played his first competitive game for Juve, which at the same time He marked his debut in the UEFA Champions League; since the association was clear ahead of schedule as group winners, coach Marcello Lippi gave the number two in the 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev match practice. In the Coppa Italia the keeper stood in all four games on the field, which was from the quarter-final against AC Perugia. Further deployments completed Chimenti then in February at Manchester United ( 1:2 / Champions League) and Calcio Como in Serie A (3:1), where Buffon failed each injured. When Juventus on 32 league matchday prematurely secured by a 2-2 draw with AC Perugia the championship title, Chimenti was still loaded ten minutes before closing, a week later he had Buffon minutes from the 47th at Reggina Calcio (1:2 ) represented. At the conclusion of the championship played Chimenti then 4-3 against Chievo Verona by. The defeat on penalties in the Champions League final against AC Milan in late May, he experienced then back out of the bank.

Quite similar was the following season for the goalkeeper. In the national cup competition Chimenti always standing on the field with the team and reached the final, which was, however, lost to Lazio ( 0:2, 2:2 ). In the Champions League he advanced to the final two group stage match days at Galatasaray ( 0-2) and against Olympiakos Piraeus ( 7:0 ) for Buffon in goal after the second round collection of Juventus had already been secured early, and played in Serie A Chimenti only the last two games, which hardly had a sporting value, because Turin third place in the final table was already clear. In the game year 2004/ 05 Gianluigi Buffon never fell out; thereby limited for Chimenti the stakes on a Champions League match ( 1-1 at Maccabi Tel Aviv, Juve was in advance as group winners solid) and two Serie A games on the 37th ( half time ) and 38 game day. Juventus had since the championship already secured in the first season with 20 top-flight teams, which should be the club of course revoked two years later due to the manipulation scandal. In addition, Chimenti could accumulate again in the Coppa Italia, but already in the second round would retire in this competition against Atalanta Bergamo.

In summer 2005, then suddenly Chimentis chance of permanent missions seemed to have come, when Buffon in the preseason drew upon a serious injury that put him up into the new year out of commission. But instead of the previous number two now to trust in the longer term, Juventus committed to Christian Abbiati of AC Milan on loan a new goalkeeper, behind the Chimenti was only replacement again. Only when Abbiati injured in late October in a 3-0 win at Lecce, allowed him Chimenti represented in this and the next two games. The Cup final in early December at Fiorentina (2-2 ) ended up being the last appearance for the time being the goalkeeper in the Juve jersey.

Time in Cagliari and Udine

Due to the imminent return of Buffon became apparent that Chimenti had only been in the second half in Turin in 2006 even third choice. Therefore, the now 35 -year-old decided in January to an internal league, despite ongoing contract transfer fee change to sardininischen club Cagliari Calcio. Immediately after his arrival he released there from Matchday Andrea Campagnolo 18 between the post and denied all further league games until the end of the season. Cagliari was finally table Fourteenth.

Antonio Chimenti was also in the 2006/2007 season as the number one goalkeeper Sardinians. With him in goal Cagliari remained from the 3rd to the 12th Series A round unbeaten, but during this run in late November against FC Empoli (0-1 ) fell to an end, Chimenti injured early in the game and had to go through its in the summer of newly obligated deputy Marco Fortin to be replaced. It was only on April 7 at U.S. Palermo (3:1) he was fit again and could return into the net. Cagliari secured at the end very scarce with only one point advantage over Chievo Verona in the league. Although Chimenti in his 22 league inserts seven times remained Concede after all, and stood in the goalkeeping hierarchy of the club at the top, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007.

After a few weeks of unemployment of the Italians then signed on 29 June a contract with Udinese Calcio, where he sat down in preparation against the young Slovenes Samir Handanovič and went as a goalkeeper in the 2007/ 08 season. But after the second round of the Serie A, a 0:5 at home to Napoli, took coach Pasquale Marino Chimenti from the box and replaced it henceforth by Handanovič. As number two keeper Chimenti was allowed after all in the Coppa Italia are on the field, where the quarter-final against Catania Calcio (3:2, 1:2 ) was the last stop. The end of February he came in representation of Handanovič yet to another Serie A match at Parma ( 0-2), but this was also his last appearance in Udinese 's suits.

End of career in Turin

On July 19, 2008 marks the changed Chimenti on loan in exchange for Emanuele Belardi to Juventus to act for the second time in his career as a back -up for Gianluigi Buffon. Just a few weeks later undertook Juve but with the Austrian Alexander Manninger another Keeper, so Chimenti now had to move back into the third term. Therefore, he completed a single competitive match for the Turin in the 2008 /09 season, but was still firmly committed in January 2009, after Buffon had been canceled due to an injury for almost the entire season so far away.

Also in 2009/10 Buffon was plagued by injuries, and when mid-March 2010 also reported Manninger not ready to play, Chimenti came in Serie A against AC Siena ( 3-3 ) and Sampdoria (0-1 ) and in the Europa League Fulham FC (1:4) to his first competitive games for almost two years. After the game in Genoa, he interrupted himself in the cabin in anger over the goal with a strike against a table 's hand. The victory scorer Antonio Cassano had the goalkeeper beaten previously with a shot from about 40 meters.

In summer 2010 Antonio Chimenti then finished at the age of 40 years, his active career. He had completed a total of 370 appearances in the top four leagues in Italy in 22 years as a pro.

Goalkeeper Coach

In July 2012, Chimenti took as part of the coaching staff of Ciro Ferrara a job as goalkeeper coach at Serie A newly promoted Sampdoria. There he had the keeper Angelo Da Costa, Sergio Romero and Tommaso Berni under his wing. But in December Ferrara was dismissed and with him the entire coaching staff after seven league defeats in a row and replaced by Delio Rossi.
