Antonio Cortis

Antonio Cortis ( born August 12, 1891 in Denia as Antonio Tomas Monton Corts, † April 2, 1952 in Valencia ) was a Spanish opera singer.

At the zenith of his career, he was considered the best lyric tenor of Spain and was hailed as the " Spanish Caruso ". In 1917, he met with Caruso in Buenos Aires in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci ( Pagliacci ) on.

Life

1898 began his musical training at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Real Madrid. At the same time he was a member of the Children's Choir of the Teatro Real. From 1902 he sang in the choir of Isidoriana Chapel. From 1909 he studied at the Conservatorio Municipal in Barcelona, teachers Nicolau and Daniel. He graduated with a diploma in composition.

In 1910 he became a member of the choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu and debuted in Gaspare Spontini's La vestal. 1912 debuted it as Casio in Giuseppe Verdi's Otello at the Teatre del Liceu. From 1915, he sang as a second tenor at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

1917 marked a tour of South America, the beginning of an international career, which led to Tosca Cortis for his final farewell to the stage in 1950 in Zaragoza by almost all the major opera houses in South, North America and Europe.

With the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, his artistic work on Spain was limited.

In 1940 he opened a singing school in Valencia.
