Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra

Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra (* 1616 in Córdoba, † February 2, 1668 ) was a Spanish painter and sculptor of the Baroque as well as architect and poet.

Biography

Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra learned the painting first with his father Agustín del Castillo and after his death in 1626 from a painter of religious images called Ignacio Aedo Calderón. Later he learned in Seville with Francisco de Zurbarán and his uncle Juan del Castillo, who became known as the teacher of the three major Andalusian painter Cano, Murillo and De Moya in the history of art. 1635 he returned to Córdoba. There he painted mainly religious frescoes and oil paintings. Many of his works can still be seen today in church buildings in and around his hometown around.
