Antonio Doria Pamphili

Antonio Doria Pamphili ( born March 28, 1749 Naples, † January 31, 1821 in Rome) was descended from the noble Italian family Pamphili and was Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

His parents were Giovanni Andrea IV Doria Pamphili - Landi and Eleonora Carafa della Stadera. Antonio Doria Pamphili, was the brother of Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Doria Pamphili (1751-1816) and uncle of Cardinal Giorgio Doria Pamfilj Landi ( 1772-1837 ). The family lived initially in Genoa, Antonio received private education. After the relocation in 1761 to Rome, he studied with his brother Giuseppe. In 1769 he graduated with a Doctor of Laws for the civil and canon law at the University La Sapienza in Rome. Thereafter, he joined the services of Pope Clement XIV and was secretary in the Papal Prelature. In 1780 he became pastor of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Cardinal

In the consistory of 14 February 1785, he was, together with his brother, with a corresponding dispensation of Pope Pius VI. (1775-1799) created cardinal deacon. The dispensation was necessary because the procedure was at this time against the nepotism at the papal court. It is now joined by high-ranking uses and tasks, his last posts were from 1818-1819 and 1819-1821 as Camerlengo as archpriest of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. From 1798-1821 Cardinal Pamphili, was serving as the senior cardinal deacon cardinal at the same time the College of Cardinals and was a participant was selected on the conclave of 1800, on the Pius VIII Pope. Antonio Pamphili died on 31 January 1821 and was buried in the family vault of the Church of S. Agnese in Agnone in Rome.
