Antonio Fernós-Isern

Antonio Fernós Isern ( born May 10, 1895 in San Lorenzo, † January 19, 1974 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican politician. Between 1946 and 1965 he represented Puerto Rico as a delegate ( Resident Commissioner ) in the House of Representatives of the United States.

Career

Antonio Fernós Isern attended the public schools and high schools in Puerto Rico. After he graduated from the Pennsylvania State Normal School in Bloomsburg. After a subsequent medical studies at the University of Maryland and his 1915 was admitted as a doctor, he started in Caguas Rico to work in this profession. In 1919 he was health officer of Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan. In the years 1920 and 1921 and 1923-1931, he was Deputy and 1931-1933 and 1942-1946 actual Minister of Health of Puerto Rico. From 1931 to 1935 he was also a member of the Faculty of Public Health School of Tropical Medicine of Puerto Rico. Politically, he was a member of the Partido Popular Democrático. In 1940 he applied unsuccessfully for the post of Resident Commissioner. In 1942 he was at the time of the Second World War, director of the civil defense of the metropolitan area of ​​Puerto Rico.

Following the resignation of the Congress delegates Jesús T. Piñero Fernós Isern by the Governor of Puerto Rico to his successor as non-voting delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC was appointed, where he took up his new mandate on 11 September 1946. After four elections he could remain until January 3, 1965 at the Congress; where he was a member of the democratic faction. In 1964 he gave up another candidacy. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Fernós Isern sat 1965-1969 in the Senate of Puerto Rico. He died on January 19, 1974 in San Juan, where he was also buried.
