Antonio Fogazzaro

Antonio Fogazzaro ( born March 25, 1842 in Vicenza, † March 7, 1911 ) - was an Italian writer and poet.

Born into a wealthy family, he received his doctorate in 1864 in Turin in jurisprudence. In Milan he visited the milieu of Scapigliatura. In 1869 he returned to Vicenza and worked as a lawyer, but soon he left this direction in order to devote himself completely to the literature. He was a member of the Accademia degli Roveretana Agiati.

In his works, one notices a constant tension between duty and passions, faith and reason. His main characters have a tortured mind and simply tend to mystical élan.

Fogazzaro found new means of interpretation in the theories of positivism and evolutionism, 1905 continued the Catholic Church, his works Il santo and Leila on the Index Librorum prohibitorum.
