Antônio Francisco Braga

Antônio Francisco Braga ( born April 15, 1868 in Rio de Janeiro, † March 14, 1945 ) was a Brazilian composer.

Life

Braga studied piano with Luiz António de Moura and harmony with Carlos de Mesquita. In 1886 he founded the Sociedade de Concertos Populares. In 1889, the Republic of Brazil was proclaimed, his composition Hino à bandeira was proclaimed the national anthem. From 1890 he studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Jules Massenet. After that, he lived in Germany and Italy in 1900 and returned back to Brazil. There he taught at the Instituto Nacional de Música from 1908 to 1933 and was director of the orchestra of the Sociedade de Concertos Sinfonicos.

Braga composed three operas, orchestral pieces, chamber music, piano pieces and songs.
