Antonio Labriola

Antonio Labriola ( born July 2, 1843 in Cassino, † February 12, 1904 in Rome) was a professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Rome. He is regarded as one of the first and most influential Italian Marxist. His works and ideas influenced, among other philosophers such as Antonio Gramsci and Benedetto Croce.

Life

Labriola was born the son of a teacher in Cassino. While studying at the University of Napoli, he was particularly influenced by Bertrando Spaventa. During this time he dealt promptly with the philosophy of Hegel and Herbart. Initially the political right near, he took over in 1890, the Marxian theory and brought a revealing correspondence with Engels and Kautsky. Antonio Labriola taught until his death, 1904, Philosophy at the University of Rome.

Theory
