Antonio Lotti

Antonio Lotti (* 1667 in Venice, † January 5, 1740 ) was an Italian composer.

Life

Antonio Lotti was the son of Matteo Angelotti, an electoral Kapellmeister at the court in Hanover. As a child Lotti sang in the choir of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, he received his artistic training by Giovanni Legrenzi Domkapellmeister. Through its teaching and promoting it was possible Lotti, already with 16 years to debut with the opera Il Giustino. On 31 May 1692, he was appointed second organist of St. Mark's Church; earlier, he had already demonstrated his talent as an assistant organist proof. On August 17, 1704 he was promoted as the successor of Giacomo Spada 1 organists.

1716 he composed for the Viennese court opera Costantino, whose score is now preserved in the Austrian National Library.

As 1717, the son of the Elector Augustus the Strong during his visit to Venice Angelotti listened to music, he invited him immediately to Dresden. Lotti accepted and stayed 1717-1719 at the court in Dresden. There also his most famous opera was Teofane. He composed for the wedding celebrations of later Elector Friedrich August. In November 1719 Lotti returned to Venice and never again composed operas, but chamber music or church music.

In 1731 there was a scandal when the famous composer Giovanni Battista Bononcini falsely claimed authorship of the madrigal in una siepe Ombrosa by Lotti for themselves. However, it was clearly demonstrated that this madrigal Lotti's collection Duetti, Terzetti e madrigali was taken from 1705. Lotti's outstanding reputation was only increased.

On April 2, 1736 he was called Lotti in the prestigious post of maestro di cappella of St. Mark's in Venice. This Lotti was a later successor to Claudio Monteverdi. He had prevailed against the competitors Antonio Pollarolo, Nicola Porpora and Andrea Porta. Through his compositions Lotti had become quite wealthy; yet he did not want to give up this post of Kapellmeister. In addition, Lotti was known as an excellent teacher: his pupils were, inter alia, Domenico Alberti, Giovanni Battista Bassani, Baldassare Galuppi, Quirino Gaspari, Benedetto Marcello and Jan Dismas Zelenka. Also Lotti had been found in the contemporary Johann Adolf Hasse an enthusiastic followers.

Already in 1736 seriously ill, Antonio Lotti died at the age of almost 75 years on January 5, 1740 in Venice. He was buried in the church of San Geminianus. With the destruction of the church in 1851 his grave stone was lost.

Lotti's opera Ascanio in 2004 was listed at the Bach Festival in Leipzig of the Batzdorfer court orchestra.

As part of the Dresden Music Festival 2009 by Antonio Lotti's opera Wiedererstaufführung Teofane took place in the small courtyard of the Dresden Royal Palace.
