Antonio Margarito

Antonio Margarito ( born March 18, 1978 in Torrance, USA ) is a retired Mexican professional boxer who fought mainly in the welterweight division.

Professional career

Margarito denied 21 amateur fights, of which he won 18. Because he coming from a poor background, was dependent on the money from the fighting, he was in 1994 at the age of 15 years professional boxer. He lost so still relatively inexperienced three of his first twelve fights, but then remained eight years undefeated.

His first title fight in 2001, he played against Daniel Santos. This fight, however, was not considered, since both in the first round collided with the heads and could not continue the fight. After Santos rose a weight class and therefore had to resign his title, Margarito fought in his next fight for the now vacant title against WBO Antonio Díaz. This fight he could by a whacked in the tenth round to decide for themselves.

He then defended the WBO title three times before he again rose against Daniel Santos in the ring, this time it was about the title in the light middleweight division. In this struggle there was another an accidental head-butt; since this time, however, were already fought ten rounds, the fight was stopped prematurely and evaluated the score sheet. Margarito lost on points and fought in the sequence further welterweight. His title four times he could defend, among other things, against the then undefeated Kermit Cintron. In July 2007, he eventually lost the WBO title with a unanimous points decision to the American Paul Williams.

13 November 2010 Margarito got the chance for the vacant WBC super welterweight title in the ( light middleweight ) against Filipino Manny Pacquiao in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington (Texas ) to compete. Although on fight night Margarito weighed twenty pounds more and was eleven inches taller than his opponent, he was largely a chance, so that the fight repeatedly stood before the demolition and Margarito finally unanimously lost on points after twelve rounds. After this defeat, he had to undergo surgery because of an orbital fracture of the right eye.

On 3 December 2011, a rematch against Miguel Cotto was at Madison Square Garden. Cotto started well in the fight and Margarito met more often to the injured from the Pacquiaokampf eye, so this was until lap seven completely swollen shut.
