Antonio Quarracino

Antonio Cardinal Quarracino ( born August 8, 1923 in Castellabate, Italy, † 28 February 1998 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) was Archbishop of La Plata and later in Buenos Aires.

Life

Antonio Quarracino grew up as the child of Italian emigrants in Argentina. After leaving school, he studied at the seminary of La Plata Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 22 December 1945 in Luján, the sacrament of Holy Orders and became diocesan priests of the Diocese of Mercedes. From 1945 to 1962 he taught at the Seminary of the Diocese of Mercedes. In addition, he took on various tasks in the diocesan administration and managed for many years the Catholic youth groups in the diocese.

In 1962, he was by Pope John XXIII. appointed bishop of Nueve de Julio. He participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council and in 1968 Bishop of Avellaneda. He was sent as Apostolic Visitor for Óscar Romero's tenure in the Archdiocese of San Salvador by the Vatican in late 1978. After his visitation he recommended to use an Apostolic Administrator seda plena in Romero's archbishopric. He declared the liberation theology -oriented Romero incapable of exercising his episcopal ministry. Ultimately, however, there was no de facto disempowerment Romero, who was assassinated in 1980 by the Salvadoran military.

1985 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of La Plata, 1990 Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

From 1990 to 1996 Antonio Quarracino was serving as the president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference. In 1991 he was accepted as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Salute a Primavalle in the College of Cardinals.

Antonio Quarracino was nominated for his commitment to the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem in 1997 by Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Caprio to Knight Grand Cross of the Order.

He died on 28 February 1998 in Buenos Aires and was buried in the local cathedral.
