Antonio Rinaldi (architect)

Antonio Rinaldi ( * 1710, † April 10, 1794 in Rome ) was an Italian architect and interior designer.

He received his education at Vanvitelli at Rome. In 1751 he was appointed Hetman Rosumowskyj after Baturyn to build there his residence ( 1752-1753 ). From 1755 he worked in Saint Petersburg. In 1756 he was court architect of the heir Peter III. on whose behalf he built several buildings in Oranienbaum. Until then, its architecture in the tradition of the Rococo and he took the step to classicism only through the influence of Russian architects. In the following years he received large orders of Catherine II and Orlov. So he built the St. Catherine's Cathedral in the former Jamburg (now Kingissepp ) and for the latter, the Marble Palace in Saint Petersburg. In 1784 he retired to Italy. The St. Isaac's Cathedral, begun by him in 1764 in St. Petersburg he placed not finished; it was completed after 1798 by Vincenzo Brenna, but since 1818 replaced by a monumental building.
