Antonio Tabucchi

Antonio Tabucchi (* September 24 1943 in Vecchiano at Pisa, † March 25, 2012 in Lisbon ) was an Italian writer, literary critic and translator.

Career

Tabucchi studied humanities in Paris and Pisa. At the University of Genoa, he became professor of the Portuguese language and literature. Antonio Tabucchi lived in Tuscany and in Portugal.

His work to Pereira ( Sostiene Pereira, 1994), set in the time of the Salazar dictatorship, made him known and is still regarded as his most important work. It was filmed in 1995 by Roberto Faenza with Marcello Mastroianni in the lead role.

The memory world of the characters and the existential search that moves, play a prominent role in Antonio Tabucchis work. In his books is the relationship between fiction and reality, as well as ( if not always directly ) placed in question between the reader and the writer. Antonio Tabucchi was a committed intellectual, often in European and international context took a stand and stood up for human rights. He saw his task is to bring his readers to doubt, so to think.

In his stories there are numerous allusions and quotes, refer to famous literary and philosophical models, but particularly on works of art. To accompany paintings, photos, sculptures, films, and sometimes even songs the reader through the stories.

Tabucchi commented on the Italian translation of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa work and gave them out. One of his books, Lisbon Requiem he wrote in Portuguese ( he had translated it into Italian, so he does not succumb to the temptation to change the text ).
