Antonio Vandini

Antonio Vandini (* around 1690 in Bologna, † 1778 ) was an Italian cellist and composer of the late Baroque.

Life and work

Antonio Vandini may have received his training in Bologna under Giuseppe Maria Jacchini, he is first mentioned as a cellist at S. Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. 1721 he moved to Padua, where he worked with short breaks about 50 years as principal cellist in the orchestra of the Basilica of S. Antonio. In the period from autumn 1720 to spring of 1721 he was " maestro al violoncello " at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. It may be that Antonio Vivaldi wrote some cello concertos for him.

Between 1722 and 1726 he lived in Prague, where he among other things, Giuseppe Tartini, Antonio Caldara and Sylvius Leopold Weiss Johann Joseph Fux under. At the coronation of Emperor Charles VI participated as King of Bohemia. He then took a job with Tartini at the court of Count Franz Ferdinand Kinsky ( 1678-1741 ). With Tartini linked him since that time, a long-standing friendship. From the year of death of Tartini's wife, the two musicians shared a common residence and denied numerous joint appearances. Like many musicians of his time, also maintained Vandini intensive written contacts with the major music theorist Padre Martini.

In 1750 he performed together with the violinist Carlo Tessarini in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. In 1770 he gave up his post in Padua, but sat down for his pupil Giuseppe Callegari as his successor one. He spent his last years in his native city of Bologna.

Through a caricature of Pier Leone Ghezzi and by Charles Burney is narrated that Vandini held the bow as the viola da gamba player from below. So Burney wrote in his diary: Padua, 2 August 1770.

"I would like the famous oboist, Matteo Bissioli and the big old Antonio [ Vandini ] heard on the Violonschell from which the Italians say, his playing and his expression sey a Parlare, that is, he 'll speak his instrument. "

"It is strange that Antonio and all local Violonschellspieler hold the bow after the old style, with hand on hair and the thumb on the wood, as bey the viola player still happens. "
