Antonio Veneziano (poet)

Antonio Veneziano (* 1543 in Monreale, † August 19, 1593 in Castellammare del Golfo ) was an Italian poet.

Veneziano was born in Sicily and led an adventurous life. In 1578 it fell into the hands of Algerian pirates. Later he came to Spain, where he met Miguel de Cervantes. Veneziano died in prison. His poems, especially " Celia " in Sicilian dialect were very popular. Veneziano also wrote Latin epigrams, Italian prose and many " canzoni ". His poetry was graceful and appealing, despite the obvious reference to Francesco Petrarca.
