Antonios Naguib

Cardinal Antonios Naguib ( born March 7, 1935 in Samalout, Egypt) is an emeritus Patriarch of Alexandria of the united with Rome Coptic Catholic Church.

Life

Antonios Naguib studied between 1953-1958 in Rome and received priestly ordination in 1960. On 2 July 1977, he was elected bishop of the Eparchy of Minya, where he remained until his retirement for health reasons in 2002. On 30 March 2006 he was elected by the Synod of the Coptic Catholic bishops to succeed Cardinal Stephanos II Ghattas, CM. On 6 April 2006 granted him the Roman Pope Benedict XVI. , As provided in CCEO, in a personal letter to ecclesial communion ( communio ). On 1 May 2006 he was enthroned in the Coptic Catholic Cathedral of Cairo. In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal bishop to the College of Cardinals.

Early 2012 suffered Antonios Naguib a stroke; the Synod of the Coptic Catholic Church then appointed on 6 February Kyrillos Kamal William Samaan, OFM, Bishop of the Eparchy of Assiut, his deputy with perfect decision-making power. On January 18, 2013 Antonios Naguib resigned as Patriarch of Alexandria.
