Antonov An-24

The Antonov An-24 ( NATO reporting name: "Coke ") is a short-haul passenger and transport aircraft of Soviet origin. Designed as a typical Antonov- high-deck and powered by two turboprop engines was and is it used in both civilian and military aviation. Overall, more than 1,300 aircraft of this type were built.

130 all built An-24, or about 10%, were destroyed today in accidents. However, a large part of this loss is due to poor maintenance or poor level of training of the crew, as the An-24 is considered to be robust and resilient. Since 1989, however, many An-24 were sold cheaply to " bush pilots " and airlines in the Third World.

Genesis

The aim of the draft An-24, whose development began in late 1956, was a robust short -haul turboprop airliner, which should be able to operate even in small fortified airfields under changing weather conditions. In April 1960, the An-24 took off for the first time and was placed in September 1963 with Aeroflot in service. Over time, a number of very successful aircraft, such as the An- 24T built around the basic model of the An- 24RW with an additional jet engine, as a freight version and the An- 24P as a water bomber. Since 1978, when production in Ukraine has been set, the An-24 in China as Xian Y- 7 is still producing.

From the An-24 An-26 military variant was derived. Civilian successor model is the An- 140.
