Antraigues-sur-Volane

Antraigues -sur- Volane is a commune with 541 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. It is also the capital of the eponymous canton Antraigues -sur- Volane.

The inhabitants are called Antraïgans and Antraïganes.

Geography

The village is surrounded by the mountains of the Cevennes and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monts d' Ardèche. After Vals- les- Bains is 8 km away, to Aubenas 14 km. The Volane, a tributary of the Ardèche, through the town and is included in the official name of the municipality.

History

Was determined in the history of the place from the rich family Antraigues, who settled in the community and played an important role in the management of Vivarais region. Superseded this was a sub- delegation of the Bas Vivarais region and the Diocese of Viviers.

Culture and sights

Antraigues 's been since the Middle Ages popular residence of regional artists who were instrumental in the shaping of the village. For example, was designed by the artist Jean Saussac the Ruelle aux cent sculptures, an alley, on the walls of small metal plaques are seen with faces and other shapes.

A destination is still the castle, perched on a basalt cliff above the city, and the modern church of Saint- Boudile whose steeple was formerly the donjon of the Château de Delaunay and of which the municipality and among other things the coup d' you Aizac, an extinct volcano can see. The place also has an ancient chapel with the name of Saint- Roche.

Personalities

The French composer and singer Jean Ferrat (1930-2010) lived in Antraigues. The place also inspired him to write the song La Montagne.
