The Antwerp International Airport ( Ndl Luchthaven Antwerp) ( IATA: ANR, ICAO code: EBAW ) is the airport of the city of Antwerp in Belgium. It is located 3 km south-east of Antwerp. Brussels is located 50 km south also still within striking distance.

History

The airport was first opened in 1923 as a military airfield of the Aviation Militaire Belge. The construction of the first passenger terminal began in 1929 and was opened in 1930.

During the German occupation during the Second World War the airport was significantly enlarged and used by the Luftwaffe. The Royal Air Force used the airfield designated by it as Airfield B.52 after the liberation of the area by the Germans during the war initially even further.

The civilian air traffic was resuming in 1946. With advent of passenger aircraft in the early 1960s, traffic had initially claimed and it threatened to cancel. Ultimately, however, the operation could be continued and the buildings and taxiways were expanded even further in the following decades.

Airlines & Destinations

The airport is not served by direct flights from German speaking countries. CityJet in codesharing with Air France and KLM flies up to four times a day to London City and bmi regional twice to Manchester (November 2013). The number of passengers was around 163,000 in 2010.

As a German -language charter target was operated in recent years by the Innsbruck Welcome Air. The connection has been set back by now. In addition to land for the sake of short runway, the environment and competition from other transport and airports mainly charter and private aircraft.
