Anwil

Anwil ( Swiss German: Ammel ) is a municipality in the district Sissach the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland. In the Basel region, it is a term most people because it is mentioned in the first verse of the song Baselbieter.

Geography

Anwil is located at 600 m asl on a plateau of the Jura in a sheltered hollow and is the easternmost municipality of the half canton of Basel-Land. Its neighboring municipalities are Oltingen, Wenslingen and Rothenfluh, and the Aargau community Wittnau and Solothurn community Kienberg.

Coat of arms

A golden horizontal stripes and below the left one black and one silver half right. The golden head of the shield suggests the former dominion Homburg and the black / silver reminiscent of Basel and to the Lords of Kienberg.

History

The village Anwil ( hamlet of the Arno) first appeared in 1276 in a document. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the possessions of the Earl of Old -Homburg. From 1400 to 1534 it went gradually over at Basel. Until 1801 Anwil was a Zollort, because after the town was the border to Austria. In the Canton of turmoil division from 1831 to 1833 the village held to Basel and had to then connect the Basel Landschäftlern.
