Anzio
Anzio ( Antium in Latin ) is a town in the province of Rome in the Italian region Latium, located about 50 789 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography
Anzio is 58 km south of Rome and 26 km west from Latina. The city center is situated on the homonymous cape on the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the north, the new neighborhood Anzio Colonia connects. It follow along the coast districts Lido di Marechiaro, Lido delle Sirene, Lido di Cincinatto, Lavinio Lido di Enea, Lido dei Gigli and Lido dei Pini. In the interior as part of the Pontine plain lie the districts of Miglioramento, Marechiaro, Villa Claudia, Falasche, Lavinio Stazione, Padiglione, Spadellata and Cavallo Morte. The municipal area extends 0-83 m slm
The beaches Levante, Lido di Ponente and Lavinia are awarded with the Blue Flag.
The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).
The neighboring municipalities are clockwise Ardea, Aprilia ( LT) and Nettuno.
Traffic
Anzio is connected to Rome since ancient times the Via Ardeatina. Today, however, the Strada Statale 207 Nettunense important that connects the city to the Strada Statale 148 Pontina in the amount of Aprilia.

History
In Roman times the place with the Latin name Antium was a popular seaside resort in the noble Romans had a villa. Local excavations brought to light valuable works of art reveal and demonstrate the high cultural level of the ruling class of society.
Antium was, until its conquest by the Romans in 468 BC, the capital of the Volsci. According to legend, the patrician Coriolanus was executed in Antium; Shakespeare also leaves some scenes of his tragedy Coriolanus play here. Coriolanus took over the Volscian power here. After the last unsuccessful revolt ( 338 BC) the city was razed. The keel of the ships Spurs Antiums adorned the Roman tribune of the forum. During the Social War Antium was on the side of Sulla and was plundered by the troops of Marius by 87 BC.
Later, toward the end of the Roman Republic, Antium was a seaside resort of the Roman patricians. The place was only a day's journey from Rome, far enough to get out of the turmoil and unrest in Rome distance, near enough to be quickly when needed in Rome can. When Cicero returned from exile, he gathered the ravaged remains of his libraries, in the hope that his scrolls were safe there. Mighty Romans settled in Antium seaside villas build. Maecenas had a villa in Antium, Caligula and Nero were born there. The ruins of Nero's villa can still be seen today.

In the Middle Ages, the city fell into disrepair. In 1378, a naval battle took place at Anzio, in the Venetian Admiral Vettor Pisani hit the Genoese fleet.
On January 22, 1944 ended up as part of Operation Shingle at Anzio and Nettuno east at American and British forces behind the German lines in central Italy; the battle for the blockaded by German troops bridgehead lasted about four months ( onset of the Allies on May 23, 1944).

Luciano Bruschini ( PdL ) was elected in April 2008 to the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 18 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council.
Twinning
Since 1958 there is a twinning between Anzio and Bad Pyrmont.
Museums
- At the Villa Adele the Museo dello Sbarco is housed, which deals with the Allied landings at Anzio in 1944.
- In the Museo Civico Archeologico archaeological finds can be seen.
