ANZUS

The ANZUS agreement, named after the participating States Australia, New Zealand and the United States (Australia, New Zealand, United States ), also called Pacific pact was signed in Canberra on September 1, 1951, on April 28, 1952 simultaneously with the Japanese peace treaty entered into force. The purpose of this agreement was to secure the Pacific region, initially mainly against a possible renewed Japanese aggression in the Far East. Was complemented by the pact, which entered into force at the same time defense pact USA - Philippines, 1955 extended by the Southeast Asia pact with additional participation from France, Britain, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, based in Bangkok. 1977 Southeast Asia Pact was dissolved. Organ is the series in August 1952 ANZUS Council, consisting of the three foreign ministers.

1986 put the U.S. from its obligations under the ANZUS treaty against New Zealand. This happened as a result of the decision of the New Zealand Government under David Lange, nuclear -powered or nuclear-armed ships equipped to refuse the start of New Zealand ports. The term ANZUS was nevertheless retained. This incident charged until today, the New Zealand -US relations.
