Aolpress

AOLPress appeared as one of the first WYSIWYG editors for web pages in English. The now obsolete computer program is easy to use and easy to learn. You can use it to create HTML pages without having to dig deeper into HTML. AOLPress is available for free, but not copyright free. It runs only on Windows.

The program was originally called NAVIpress, later GNNpress and was then acquired by AOL. There are no restrictions for non- AOL users. Since 1997 it is no longer being developed, but still offers a fairly wide range of functions:

  • Useful WYSIWYG including frames
  • Syntax Check HTML 3.2 automatically (optional Netscape Features )
  • Structured programming automatically
  • Support for creating tables, bitmaps, text boxes, etc.
  • Ease of learning, tutorial available
  • Additional built-in text editor with color highlighting of tags including search / replace and drag and drop
  • Multi-level undo and redo
  • Automatically converting special characters to HTML coding
  • Online web browser and viewer in a
  • No additional software for editing and checking the generated HTML source code required
  • Graphical representation of the linked pages in a "mini- web "

There used AOLPress versions for the operating systems Unix and Mac OS.

The Windows versions save even today a newline in Unix format (ie only LF, not CRLF). If you want to edit AOLPress files with another editor, this should be familiar with the Unix newline. This is not the case with the Notepad that comes with Windows, but probably also in the accompanying WordPad.

Disadvantages of AOLPress

  • AOLPress is considered very crash happy. However, there is a well-functioning recovery feature that can restore a previous working state in most cases, so that data loss may occur rarely.

More modern alternatives for HTML beginners

  • FrontPage Express for Windows
  • OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice Writer for HTML pages
  • StarOffice - WWW page editor on Linux
