Aosdána

Aosdána (of ir aos Dána = " artists " ) is an association of Irish artists who have achieved in their business name and rank, and the only representative company of its kind in Ireland. It works ideally self - regulated, but is directed by the state and is funded by the state.

The organization

Aosdána in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers, notably by Anthony Cronin, who was also a government adviser at the time, established by the State Arts Council of Ireland ( " to honor artists Those Whose Work Has Made of outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland" ). Membership arises only from the nomination by a member of Aosdána and requires the approval of another member, as well as the confirmation of the annual general meeting in accordance with statute by at least 50 % of the voters plus one vote. The number of members of Aosdána is limited to 250 people; before 2005, the limit was 200 people. Members can be visual artists, writers, musicians, architects and choreographers who were born in Ireland or live in Ireland for at least five years and have created an independent work.

For outstanding achievements members can be distinguished as Saoi. This happens after nomination by 15 members by the consent of the General Assembly with 50 % plus one vote; the title is then awarded by the President of Ireland and is valid for life. The total number of Saoi at the same time is limited to seven, and it can not be at the same time as a nachgewählt Saoi.

Under certain conditions Aosdána members can get a scholarship, called Cnuas obtained from the Arts Council of Ireland to allow the recipient of a full-time study of his work. Even members who are not currently resident in Ireland are entitled to receive payment when their main work was produced in Ireland. The scholarship is awarded for five years and may be extended. The amount of the scholarship in 2008 was just under 15,000 euros a year.

The Executive Board of Aosdána is called Toscaireacht; it consists of ten members, called Toscairí. The seat of Aosdána is in Dublin Arts Council.
