Apache Directory

Apache Directory is a project of the Apache Software Foundation, which provides solutions around directory services. Particularly relevant technologies in the context of the project are LDAP and Kerberos; Apache Directory provides for both protocols free implementations in Java under the Apache license.

Currently, the following sub-projects exist:

  • Apache Directory Server - a realized in Java LDAP server
  • A server supports the two -factor authentication - Triplesec
  • Apache Directory Studio - The Eclipse-based tools around LDAP and Directory Services

History

Origin of the project is a company founded by Alex Karasulu in 2002 Sourceforge project called ldapd that had to implement a LDAP server in Java goal. In October 2003, the sources were taken in the Foundation Incubator, the Apache software, which they successfully left as a new Apache project in 2005. In October 2006, version 1.0 of the Apache Directory Server has been released. It was the first open source LDAP server that has been certified by the Open Group as a standard -compliant. Alex Karasulu is still involved as an architect and developer in the project, but it is no longer available since March 2007.
