Apalachicola is a city and also the county seat of Franklin County in the U.S. state of Florida with 2,231 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Apalachicola is located approximately 110 km south-west of Tallahassee on the Apalachicola Bay, a bay on the Gulf of Mexico. The city is the namesake of the more northerly Apalachicola National Forest.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 2,231 inhabitants distributed to 1,352 households. The population density was 455.3 inh. / Km ². 66.9 % of the population were white, 26.4 % African American, 0.6 % Native American and 0.3 % Asian Americans. 3.3% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.4% in different ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 32.6 % of all households lived in 25.2 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 58.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.24 persons and the average family size is 2.88 people.

23.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.1% were 20-39 years old, 28.0% were 40-59 years old and 26.4 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 44 years. 47.4 % of the population were male and 52.6 % female.

The average annual income was $ 21,900, while 40.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100 % of the population.

In Apalachicola, there are 19 different churches with 9 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is most strongly represented at three churches. There are 3 to no denomination belonging churches ( as of 2004).

Traffic

Apalachicola is traversed by U.S. Highways 98 and 319. The 8 km long John Gorrie Memorial Bridge connects the city to the east, the East Point. With the Apalachicola Regional Airport, the city has its own airport. The nearest international airport is Tallahassee Regional Airport ( around 120 km).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 25 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the very low range. There were two burglaries, nine robberies and car theft.
