Apastepeque volcanic field

The volcanic field Apastepeque located near the town Apastepeque and north of the town of San Vicente, El Salvador and consists of two dozen volcanic craters, Lavadomen, cinder cones and maars.

Andesitic and dacitic lava domes created in the wake of ash eruptions. Some of the following basaltic eruptions ended with the formation of steep-walled crater lakes with a depth of up to 100 meters. Some of these now form lakes, such as the Laguna de Apastepeque and the Laguna Chalchuapán.
