Apennine yellow-bellied toad

Apennine yellow-bellied toad (Bombina pachypus )

The Apennine yellow-bellied toad or Italian Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina pachypus alternatively: Bombina variegata pachypus ) is within the order of Anura to the " primitive " family Bombinatoridae and to the species of toads. The taxonomic status of these in 1991 due to genetic differences as an independently postulated nature is controversial; some authors assign them to continue or again as a subspecies of the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata ).

Features

The animals correspond in size and appearance largely the yellow-bellied toad. The males and females are correspondingly large between 35 and 55 millimeters. The top is gray-brown, often with washed, lighter patches. The underside, including the insides of the limbs and the fingers and toes is gray-blue to violet-black with striking, bright yellow to orange spots or areas that occupy usually more than half of the bottom. Much like yellow-bellied toads in the Balkans tends the Apennine yellow-bellied toad to a greater area contiguous yellow or orange colored belly games.

Dissemination

While the range of the yellow-bellied toad ( nominate ) about the height of the Po has its southern boundary in Italy, south of the same is found only the Apennine yellow-bellied toad; so there are no areas where both taxa are represented.

Endangering

Due to the limited habitat and way of life a risk must be assumed by habitat destruction in the Apennine yellow-bellied toad. Your protection status under the Habitats Directive reflects the yellow-bellied toad.
