Appearance

The body of the fish is moderately high backs. The caudal fin is rounded. In the male, a heavy solid anal and dorsal fins are added. The coloring of the species is very variable, being yet clear whether it is geographical variants or races. There is a known blue yellow race, in which the ventral fin of the males is strong lemon-yellow, the largest part of the body but has a glowing light blue. In contrast, Rio Cataniapo occurring males have a beige tone and are colored much simpler.

The females generally have a yellow ground color. During the breeding females have a more intense colored breeding plumage.

Distribution area

Compared to other types of Apistogramma the Rotstrich - Apistograma occur in a relatively large area of ​​distribution. They can be found in the catchment area of ​​the upper and middle Orinoco in Colombia and Venezuela.

In this habitat the fish exclusively in the flat and low-flow edge regions are detected. They conceal themselves from predators in the dense stands of aquatic plants.

Reproduction

Rotstrich - Apistogramma are cavity nesters. The females lay the eggs from under roots and the like hide and seek. Parental care is carried out solely by the females.
