Apocalypse of Adam

The Apocalypse of Adam (NHC V, 5 ) preserved in the corpus of Nag Hammadi writings and is counted for Sethianischen Gnosis. In addition to basic Jewish influences with clear parallels to the Old Testament Egyptian and Greek influences (eg nine Pierides or Muses are mentioned ) recognizable. Whether Christian influences may exist, is controversial. Whether the Apocalypse of Adam is pre-Christian, is just as controversial, eventually they came about in the 1st century BC. The uniformity of the whole text is doubtful. One of the main text may have been enriched by other elements or sources.

Content

According to the brief introduction and the concluding sentences containing the Apocalypse of Adam Adams revelations that he has preached to his son set and which have been passed on from this then. Adam initially reported by Eva, of the creation of man, and a common time the knowledge and glory, in which they were both angels. This is followed by the loss of true knowledge, a time of fear and servitude begins, and death receives power over the people. This is followed by the deluge, in consequence of which the earth is divided among the descendants of Noah. Below 13 kingdoms are described in connection with the origin of a coming savior. Thereafter follow apocalyptic threats of punishment and promises of salvation for the virtuous.

In the final paragraph, the salvific meaning of the revelations of Adam to Seth again ( as a hidden Gnosis, holy baptism, living water ) is removed deleted.
