Apollinaris Claudius

Claudius Apollinaris († 175 ) was bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia, and a Christian apologist. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic and the Greek Orthodox Church as a saint.

Claudius Apollinaris was perhaps the predecessor of Aberkios Bishops of the Phrygian city of Hierapolis. He turned in his writings, especially against Montanism, who just won increasing prevalence of Phrygia and settled on a church meeting in Hierapolis in the year 170 or 171 Montanus, the founder of the Montanists excommunicated. An apologetic writing in defense of Christianity taught Claudius Apollinaris of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In it, he refers to the Rain Miracle in the Quad country during the Marcomanni wars, which he attributes to God, while the Romans this make the intervention of their own gods responsible.

It is unclear what city Claudius Apollinaris died. In Florarium Sanctorum a funeral of a Apollinaris in Antioch in Pisidia is mentioned for the June 1, and Phrygia is immediately adjacent, so this might not involve the bishop of Hierapolis. The memorial of St. Claudius Apollinaris is in the Greek Orthodox on February 7 and in the Roman Catholic Church on January 8.
