Apollinaris of Ravenna

Apollinaris (* Antioch; † buried in Ravenna ) is considered the founder of the Christian Church of Ravenna, was their bishop and died a martyr. Around him many legends. The report one, Apollinaris was used by Peter himself as bishop and lived to 75. During an attack by non-Christians he had been abused and killed painfully.

Other legends after he had survived the abuse and had gone to Dalmatia to proselytize there. His life is dated to the year 200 in other legends.

Apollinaris ' grave is located in Ravenna. In the year 549 the eponymous basilica was inaugurated Apollinare in Classe over his grave. His relics were transferred in the middle of the 9th century in the church Saint Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, since the other basilica was easily accessible by their position looters. Relics are found today among other things in the Apollinaris Church in Remagen, in Gorcum, Dijon, Reims and in the Lambertuskirche to Dusseldorf.

As patron saint is venerated Apollinaris in Ravenna, Remagen and Dusseldorf. The Biggest Funfair on the Rhine is celebrated in his name.

In art Apollinaris is presented in a white robe with a black cross. As insignia he wears crosier and a club with which he was killed, according to legend.

Remembrance

His Catholic feast day is July 20. In the Orthodox Church he falls on July 23.
