Barbusano ( Apollonias barbujana ) is a species of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ). It is endemic to the Canary Islands.

Features

Barbusano is a tree that grows up to 25 meters high. The wood is hard and brown-red and is also known as Canarian ebony. The leaves are ovate - lanceolate, without glands, dark green and shiny. The edge is smooth, slightly rolled over and curled. At the leaf surface caused by bile bulges are sometimes present. The flowers are hermaphroditic, yellowish, sechszählig and fragrant. They are arranged at the ends of the branches paniculate. The fruits are about 1 to 2 inches tall, olive-shaped, fleshy and blue-black when ripe.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

Occurrence

Barbusano occurs in Madeira and the Canary Islands, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. The species grows in the laurel forests, where it occurs mainly in drier sites and at the bottom. It is less common than other Lauraceae.

Use

The wood, also known under the name Canarian ebony is highly sought after for its resistance and hardness, and is inter alia for furniture production, manufacture used by coffered ceilings and doors.
