Apoo-Festival

Apoo is one of the two major festivals in western Ghana. It is celebrated annually in April / May in cities like Techiman, Wenchi and Nkoranza and in November in Nwoasi.

It originated in Bono - Manso, capital of the historical Kingdom of Bono.

According to oral tradition, according to the word Apoo from the verb Po infers that reject or deny (English: reject) means. The festival is aimed against all evil like disasters, fear and curses.

Apoo is a kind of carnival, during which men and women (and vice versa) dress. Local and national authorities are jokingly but relentlessly confronted with the popular opinion; particular cases of corruption are denounced. However, it is also about reconciliation: family feuds are settled preferably during the Apoo.

The highlight of the Apoo is the pageant of the local king ( Omanhene ) through the city.

In 2004, warned local AIDS / HIV organizations in Nkoranza occasion of Apoo festivals before further spread of the HIV virus in the region.
